Owning a late 80's GM near luxury car once was enough for me. I loved that Olds Toronado Trofeo, but good god was that car expensive to keep on the road.

Oh yeah. The 3400 has absolutely NO room to work on and being an early domestic DOHC design maintenance is... interesting. The manual Getrag transmission is Lamborhini levels of bullshit to upkeep. That said, I do think they’re pretty to look at. Like a mini-Trans Am

There’s nothing strange about wanting a car with vertical door handles a digital dash!
That generation of Grand Prix was good looking, too bad it didn’t really have performance to match.

The Trofeo had the 3.8.

If it were a turbo one, I might agree.

205hp out of the 3400 wasn’t terribly bad

There is a kid I see a lot that drives a minty fresh red one. Some one told me he got it from his Grandpa.

Those door handles are crow though, I had a friend who owned a cutlass, who's Dad owned one of these Grand Prixs. They both replaced the door handles more than once on each side of their cars.

Hmm, knew something about kind of crappy GM cars from the nineties that you didn’t. I feel special.

Here’s mine. It was my first car and I still have it 10 years later. Just the 3100 though. 225k miles on it and I just drove it on a 1200 mile round trip last weekend, and it performed flawlessly.
Except for the time it oversteered on an urban off-ramp, but that was more down to slightly over-inflated (highway MPGs, yo) old tires.

Wait... really? I’ve looked into Fieros and stuff, and have always heard that the 5-speed Getrag was a pretty bulletproof transmission, handles power decently, and bolts up to almost all FWD GM powerplants with no problem. Have I been mislead? I have a hard time believing they could really be that unreliable...

That’s pre-facelift. Which I kinda consider a different bodystyle because the body kit was so different even if it is the same generation.

My grandfather didn’t have any problems with his (aside from crashing it), but given GM’s well known reputation for quality, problems wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

I always loved these also, kinda hard to find the ones with the recessed headlights though.

Do you live in a cold environment? If I recall correctly they only had problems in cold weather.

What you really need is one that’s five years older and a lower trim level
...like mine

He was in Massachusetts, but on the Cape, so normally his weather was pretty mild.

I would buy it just to replace my wheels with those. I got the dumb little plastic vortex-y ones that are not gold enough and look like they came off a Mercury Tracer

Oh, maybe mine’s just older. It’s from 1991 and it’s an SE too, I just assumed it was a lower trim because I don’t have a wing or the waffle iron taillights.

I ended up with my parents ‘87 GP after my first new car, a Mitsu Precis, died a well deserved death after owning it for 42 months (6 months past the final payment). It was white with blue interior and PONTIAC right across the upper windshield. One time I went down state here in Florida to see a girl I knew working in Palm Beach and I was in Jacksonville (still am). It was 1994 and there big stretches where it still wasn’t built up yet along I-95.
So, I left Jax at 9 pm after working from 10-8 that day and had to get to her work by 1:40 am as they locked the door and wouldn’t let anyone else in. Mind you, this was still in the “pre-cell phone” days. I made my way down and as would be my luck at around 1:20 am or so I saw a sign that said “Palm Beach 40 miles”. We had been talking some on the phone, she was hot and there was the promise of 3 very fun days with her, so I did what any single stupid 20-something guy would do: I floored it!
Now the one thing about South Florida vs North Florida in those days was the interstate was banked a bit on the curves. So I am hitting a solid 120+ and any time I see a car in my lane I “flash to pass”. Luckily for me is all the could see was a white car flashing lights coming fast with PO...and they got right out of the way. I hit the exit ramp went a 1/4 mile down the street and right into her work’s parking lot. Right as I stepped out of the car a guy pushing the last customer out yells “We’re Closed!”. I said I was her to see whatever this girls name was and he was like “Oh, your ___. Come on in.” Needless to say I felt like a champ.
Sadly, I ended up heading right back 90 minutes later as she neglected to tell me a few things. Like she had to spend the next day getting her license...her MARRIAGE license. Longest drive back home ever. Kept the car until 2005 though.

Here’s the window sticker for my car. The spoiler was the one and only option my car had. The lights were just a year-to-year styling change.

Ah. Ok. I’m pretty sure that is the only piece of documentation I didn’t get when I bought mine. They left virtually everything else in the glovebox.
